Hell Beast episode 1
6/10/03

Yo, Richard.

I've read all of ep 1

Firstly can I suggest, you decrease the size of the pictures (I mean file size not image size), It takes way too long to download on my cruddy 56k modem. You can use programs such as Jasc (TM) Paintshop Pro, to reduce file size dramaticaly but keep good quality.

Secondly, there are quite a few spelling errors

Third, well I was rather amused by the whole thing, I like it, i think the "looks like its been drawn by a 5 year old" thing works quite well (intended or not!).

Last - Sorry, but surely you could have done better with the cliffhanger?!?!? :)

Jasper
Jasper Johns 1

Nice one Rich!

Thanks for credit.

Will we be seeing the Third Doctor gurning in this adventure?
Emberposse

I love it! The presentation (as drawings done by hand) is pretty novel on here. That's the best drawing of Pertwee I've ever seen, too!

Other points I liked:

The fact that the Doctor and Jo seem to just be playing a board game rather than doing anything constructive on the final page.

The mincing soldier (incidentally, what does the Brigadier say on that panel? The speech box is too small and I can only make out half the words. Here's a suggestion: if someone's supposed to be whispering, make the speech boxes the same size as before, but do the speech itself in italics.)

The way you made it look like night in some pictures.

The fact that you've joined the legions of people who make the Brigadier look more like Stalin! You should see the old Who annuals. They did the same thing. There's one picture where I swear the Brigadier's been shot (he's clasping his head looking pained).

Rather wonderful, all in all.

Is it me, or was that a perfect encapsulation of the Pertwee Era?
Good show IARW!
MortyFunk
MortimusMonk

This is marvellous! I still say your Pertwee is the best drawing I've seen of any Doctor, ever! And that cliffhanger is brill!

Love the 80's credit animation too (though you spelt "Technical" wrong - gah!). How did you make it? I've often wanted to experiment with putting people's faces in the title sequence and making animations.
The Secretive Bus

He certainly has got the characters right!
Emberposse

what fun !
Mezzaninedoor

That's well good. I seriously wasn't expecting that cliffhanger - it even made me jump!
Nick Giles

Actually a very good story. Most impressive Mr Williams

W00hoo!

We get to see Jo, in short skirt, climbing through a window...
Emberposse

Really rather fun, in a strange and really rather fun kind of way, Richard!

When are you going to attempt a multi-doctor story?
Hollywound

Really good fun! This is great stuff :)

Roll on the concluding episode!

Tom
FitzKriener

Still Excellent, How many episodes will there be?

Excellent stuff: I demand a Dalek story now.

If that's not too much trouble.
Emberposse

I really liked this! It was a lot of fun and very well done. I hope you can do more

Ooooooh lovely!

Can I presume from what we have seen so far and the name of the comic strip - that the baddy are the flowers?

Reg

How exciting! Which Doctor is starring in this?

Roll on episode two! Pertwee's likeness in your strips . . well it's uncanny!

Tom
FitzKriener

I think there's something about Mary...

W00t.

(Btw, I don't really deserve any credit: this is all Richard's creation ;) )
Emberposse

Hurrah! I loved that Brigadier bit in part 1.
And as per the show, the episodes either take place on earth or on a colony world in the far future.

[episode carried message mentioning the ending of the strips]
No - you must continue. I am waiting to see how the story ark is going to unfold in regards to the rather homocidal guy in the red tunic.

Am enjoying it muchly - one can never have enough cartoon Doctors - hence Scream of the Shalka
DIY Sheep

I still look forward to seeing it every week!Keep up the good work!

No, don't stop! You must continue!!!

Jo saves the day!

She's a genius! It's her tight knickers, you know. Makes her do daft things, and gets results.
Emberposse

Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun.

And I didn't guess who dunnit.

I think Hellbeast was probably better, but only by a fraction.

But still...

Fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun, fun.

Do more!
Adam Perks

A fantastic story very well drawn and very well plotted.
I couldnt guess who done it till the last part.
The art has improved since the last i think.
Excellent work.
And im glad i won the competiotn.

The Undeadly Assassin [who won the competition to win the original artwork for the story]

Your Index pages take too long to load even with DSL, suggestion - make real thumbnails of each page to put on those pages to lessen loading time. Also remember to make pages targeted to browsers of 800 x 600 pixels, most users have that sizing. So I woudl suggest resizing the original pictures to a width of 700 pixels. make your thumbnails 100 pixels in hieght.
Gmendias [ with reference to the Hell Beast site, so not really a review of The Silent Killer episode 4]

Doctor Who and the Great Christmas Turkey Chase episode 1

Lovely, Very festive and better production values than some of the actual TV series of that era.
Soveda

I love it, as always, you've captured Pertwee perfectly

The Forgotten Gods episode 1

Groovy as usual I Am, but I kept wishing the 'important experiment' in the first episode was a Rubicks cube (or was it a joke and I missed it?).

Ah what an adventure! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing it with us, Richard (and friends).

Of course Mr Williams. I never miss an episode.

Sorry I missed you on the chat room - was engaged in a debate about Paul McGann's lack of hair styling abilites - lovely as ususal (cartoon not hairstyle).

And I have a request. Can you do a cartoon version of all eight, er sorry nine Docs for us.

That must have taken a lot of time. Your caricature of Pertwee is super, Richard!

Thanks! Enjoyed the strip, by the way. Pretty interesting. Could we see the original picture of the Master that you decided not to use because you thought it was crap, too?

I've just spent a happy hour or so going through all the strips, and I think they catch the spirit of the Pertwee Era as well as anything I've read- so well done!

Oh dear, I thought, another self-indulgent fan comic which is utterly devoid of any merit, artistically and narratively.

I apologise profusely for even thinking that. There's an elegance about both the storytelling and illustrations. Real clarity. I'm looking forward to the continuing story but in the meantime I'll be roaming around the rest of your site.

I must admit I preferred the hand-drawn lightning to the contrasted Photoshop clouds version because it maintains the style better but the lighting and colouring are lovely and the characters vivid and well-defined. I really like the style.

Nice one Rich.

Good to see the 3rd Doc involved in an Earth bound murder mystery. Nicely atmospheric too. Would give the 4th Doc a run for his money.
Emberposse

This is probably me, but I can't read it. When a page loads - it starts off really big and nice and then shrinks into this tiddley version in which I can't make out either the dialogue or the pictures.
However what I do glimpse during the big loading moments I like...
